Lobbying and Advocacy as a Non-Profit Organization

Picture
NFOM is a grass-roots, consumer organization, not qualified to provide legal advice. Members of the organization have, however, attended workshops about lobbying and advocacy, and have learned helpful information that guides the practices of the group.

This portion of the website is under construction, but a bit of basic information is available below.

*Nebraska Friends of Midwives is a non-profit organization recognized by the state, and as a section 501(c3) organization by the IRS. More information about that is available here.

*As a 501(c3) NFOM is prohibited by law from engaging in political activities. Lobbying is permissible, but not as a substantial part of the organization's activities.

Lobbying and Advocacy
Learning to distinguish between lobbying and advocacy can be confusing at times, but it is imperative that NFOM operate with the confines of its IRS status. A helpful resource is the Alliance for Justice. Links to educational material they provide on the matter:

Nebraska State Accountability and Disclosure
Additionally, the State of Nebraska has requirements for lobbyists, which are overseen by the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission.  Registration, reporting, and following the guidelines set forth by the NADC are all part of the lobbying work that NFOM does.
